Innovation and Learning

Start with clarity of intent.

Now build it out with an evocative vision. Improvise progress by tinkering: with lots of trial and lots of error. The not knowing is the best bit: the mysteries the surprises, and from time to time the windfalls!

Space for Learning

These notes available at www.happysteve.com under ‘Notes -> Sacred Heart’

Intro:

From industrial paradigm to ???

Three (of many) disrupters:

  • engagement economy (or ‘attention economy’)
  • automation of learning resources
  • hyperconnectedness / collaboration

e.g. Minecraft

Inspiration Station

If school were a Monopoly board? What goes in? Everything is a choice.

Symbol space (virtual space) + physical space, on one continuum.

  • IdeaPaint
  • Mobile whiteboards. (mobile everything!)
  • Write on windows, tables, floors.
  • Butcher’s paper, floor or walls.
  • Who can see the writing/drawing? How permanent is it? How is it broadcast?

Interview with Pippa Yeoman:

  • space has ‘agency’
  • as we move through we space we converse with it
  • space as backdrop, container, or habitat
  • empty space
  • can students ‘appropriate’ space for emerging purposes

Three useful terms for decoding space:

  • cave = 1:self
  • campfire = 1:many
  • watering hole = many:many

Virtual Versions

  • cave – e.g. blogging (private?)
  • campfire – curating an online learning landscape. Landscape, frame, gateway, tracking system, ‘just-in-times’
  • watering hole – Edmodo, + endless ‘Web 2.0’ tools.
